Engineering Clean Utility Piping for a Large Pharmaceutical Customer

Protechnicon has successfully provided the entire engineering of the clean utility piping for a leading pharmaceutical customer. This complex project involved several types of piping systems and required precise planning and execution to meet the high demands of the pharmaceutical industry.

Challenges and solutions

  • Large Size and Complexity: The project involved more than 5,000 meters of pipework and 600 valves, installed in a technical room above the cleanrooms where the medicines are produced.
  • Various Piping Systems: The clean utility pipes consisted of N2, CO2, Clean Compressed Air (CCA), Water for Injection (WFI), and Purified Water (PW). Each system had its own specific requirements and installation instructions.

Complete Design and Implementation

  • Technical Area Above Cleanrooms: The pipes were installed in a technical area above the cleanrooms, adding additional complexity due to limited space and the need not to disrupt production processes.
  • Multidisciplinary Teamwork and BIM: Working together in a multidisciplinary team with weekly Building Information Modeling (BIM) updates and clash detections made the design challenging but essential for successful implementation.
  • Developing P&ID into 3D Model: We created a complete 3D model from a Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) and component list, which was then developed into detailed workshop drawings and Isometrics on 2D.

Project duration

  • The entire engineering and implementation took approximately one year, during which all systems were delivered according to planning and specifications.

With this project, Protechnicon has once again proven its ability to successfully tackle large-scale and complex technical challenges within the Pharmaceutical sector. Our innovative approach, detailed engineering, and effective collaboration have led to an efficient and reliable installation of the clean utility piping, which is crucial for our customer’s production processes.
